Jia En and Federico met while working at Bloomberg in New York, and soon realized they shared a deep interest in travel. But as young people starting out in an expensive city, their ideas of travel were financially limited to exploring neighborhoods at the end of train lines. Only $2, single trip.
Yet, as part of the post-post-cold war generation that both has their cake and eats it, Jia and Fede found a way to afford traveling while still living in a big city: While on vacation, they rented out their apartments temporarily. Visitors to the city, in turn, found a cheap alternative to hotels. Genius!
But even that was too much effort — Jia and Fede had to sift through hundreds of responses from classified ads they had put up, most for overlapping date requests (to pick who over who?!), and had to deal with no-shows. Visitors were also uncomfortable turning up with large amounts of cash to pay for the rooms.
In thinking up better ways to find guests and accept payments, they realized that many others — hosts and guests alike — would benefit from a more efficient way to connect and transact for short-term stays. They soon ditched their corporate gigs and started Roomorama.com – the peer-to-peer rental website for quicker, stress free renting.
